Among Hires Top Lawyer Caleb Alaka as Corruption Probe Intensifies
KAMPALA, Uganda — Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has retained prominent city lawyer Caleb Alaka to lead her legal defence as security agencies widen their investigation into allegations of illicit enrichment and money laundering, sources confirmed Saturday.
Alaka, one of Uganda’s most experienced criminal defence and constitutional lawyers, was granted access to Among’s heavily guarded Nakasero residence on Saturday evening following hours of tight security deployment around the property, according to multiple sources.
The legal move comes as a joint security team led by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), with support from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, reportedly conducted searches at Among’s residence, examining documents, financial records and property linked to the case.
High-Stakes Legal Battle
Alaka is widely known for handling sensitive cases involving senior government officials, politicians and security-related prosecutions, earning a reputation as one of Kampala’s most aggressive courtroom litigators. His arrival signals that Among is preparing for what could become one of the biggest legal and political battles of her career.
The investigation follows confirmation from Inspector General of Government Aisha Batala Nalule that her office had commenced inquiries into a complaint accusing Among of possible failure to fully declare wealth and assets under the Leadership Code Act.
Political Pressure Mounts
The legal and political pressure on Among has escalated sharply in recent days following the dramatic collapse of support from the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), led by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The general has since openly backed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth for Speaker of Parliament.
Security agencies are expected to extend operations to Among’s other properties in the coming days, including locations in Bukedea.
Neither Alaka nor Among’s legal team had publicly commented on the nature of their engagement or the status of the investigations as of Saturday night.
