Museveni Declines Drink from Egyptian Hosts, Sparks Online Debate
CAIRO – President Yoweri Museveni, currently on a three-day working visit to Egypt at the invitation of his counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has caused a stir online after a video emerged showing him refusing a drink offered by his Egyptian hosts.
The footage, filmed during a meeting at Egypt’s State House, shows Museveni turning down the beverage with both hands, prompting visible surprise from those around him. The moment has ignited a heated debate on social media, with some users calling the gesture “rude” and “undiplomatic,” while others defended it as a personal safety precaution.
Museveni, who is known to carry local food and drinks during long trips, is said to avoid consuming unfamiliar refreshments due to fears of poisoning by political enemies who wish to see him leave power.
The Ugandan leader’s visit to Cairo, which began earlier this week, is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Uganda and Egypt in areas including water resources, trade, and infrastructure.
