Ugandan Comedian Kapere Lufotose Dies Suddenly at Hospital in Buddo
Kampala, Uganda — Yokana Mbuuse, the popular Ugandan comedian widely known by his stage name Kapere Lufotose, has died. He passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at a hospital in Buddo, Wakiso District, after complaining of a severe headache. He was reportedly in his mid-50s, with some reports putting his age at 56.
His management confirmed he had no known prior illness. Preliminary accounts indicate that earlier on Sunday, he and his wife had visited their children along Entebbe Road. He had also been seen at a gathering in Bugolobi in the early hours of the morning before his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the hospital.
The news was first shared widely on social media by journalist Kasuku and was quickly confirmed by opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), president of the National Unity Platform (NUP). In a heartfelt tribute posted online, Bobi Wine described the loss as devastating:
“A few moments back, I just received the most devastating news regarding the untimely passing of our brother, dear friend and comrade Yokana Mbuuse, fondly called Kapere Lufotose. A man who made every dark moment light. A man who loved his country and wished it well! A loss so difficult to take in.”
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi also paid tribute, noting that he had met Kapere at NUP offices in Kavule only the week before. NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya said the party would work with the family on funeral arrangements.
Kapere rose to prominence as a member of the Amarula Family comedy group alongside Allan Mujuni (Amooti Omubalanguzi) and Nicholas Mpiirwe (Messe Bontwe). Known for his distinctive facial expressions, physical comedy, and stage presence, he turned features that once drew ridicule into the foundation of a successful entertainment career. He also appeared in music videos, including Bobi Wine’s “Mr. Money,” and later became an outspoken NUP supporter. In 2025, he collected nomination forms seeking a councillor position in Makindye Division.
He was married to Lydia Nakandi (popularly known as Mama Trump); the couple formalised their marriage in 2017 and had children together.
Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow entertainers, and political figures across Uganda, remembering Kapere both for the laughter he brought and for his engagement in opposition politics. Funeral arrangements were expected to be announced by the family and management.
