FDC’s Nandala Mafabi Vows to Block Lukwago’s Re-election, Accuses Him of Splitting Opposition
Kampala, Uganda – In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, FDC presidential flag bearer Nandala Mafabi has declared an all-out war against Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, vowing to ensure his defeat in the 2026 mayoral race—even if it means backing a rival candidate from another party.
The fiery remarks were made during a closed-door meeting with FDC top officials, where Mafabi blamed Lukwago for the disintegration of the once-powerful opposition party. He alleged that Lukwago’s actions led to the formation of the breakaway People’s Front for Transition (PFT), spearheaded by Dr. Kizza Besigye and other dissenting members.
“If it wasn’t for Erias Lukwago’s ways, FDC would still be united today,” Mafabi reportedly fumed. “Even if it means sponsoring a different candidate from another party, I will do it until he is completely defeated.”
The FDC has already fronted Ibrahim Kasozi as its mayoral candidate for Kampala, but insiders admit he faces an uphill battle against the politically entrenched Lukwago. The party’s internal divisions have significantly weakened its influence, leaving many members, including Mafabi, seething with resentment.
NUP Shifts Strategy, Tightens Race
Meanwhile, sources reveal that the National Unity Platform (NUP) has reversed earlier plans to withdraw from the Kampala mayoral contest. Instead, the party has resolved to rally behind Eng. Balimwezo Nsubuga, a move that has reportedly left Lukwago in a state of anxiety.
With NUP’s renewed support for Balimwezo, the race is set to become a fierce three-way battle, further complicating Lukwago’s bid for re-election. Political analysts suggest that if opposition votes split between Lukwago and NUP’s candidate, it could open doors for an NRM-backed contender to gain an advantage.
Lukwago’s Sleepless Nights?
As the political chessboard shifts, Lukwago—a seasoned politician known for his vocal opposition to the government—now faces one of his toughest re-election challenges yet. With former allies like Mafabi openly working against him and NUP strengthening its campaign, the Kampala mayoral race is shaping up to be a high-stakes showdown.
Will Lukwago overcome the growing opposition within the opposition, or will the combined forces of FDC and NUP dethrone the long-serving Lord Mayor? The battle for Kampala is only heating up.
