
ARUA, UGANDA – September 27, 2025 – The Muni University community is in mourning following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three of its staff members in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The tragic incident occurred on the Pakwach-Nebbi road as the university vehicle was returning to Arua from an official duty in the capital, Kampala.
According to an official death announcement signed by the Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Simon Anguma Katrini, the deceased have been identified as Rev. Canon Patrick Acema, the Chaplain of the Advent of Christ Chapel of Muni University; Mr. Washington Opiyo, a Senior Sports Tutor; and Mr. Kennedy Acidri, the driver of the vehicle.
The announcement, released on September 27, 2025, expressed “profound sorrow” on behalf of the University Council, Senate, Management, Staff, and Students.
In addition to the three fatalities, two other individuals were seriously injured in the crash. The university has stated that burial arrangements for the deceased will be communicated at a later date.
The news has sent shockwaves through the university community, where the deceased were well-known and respected figures. Rev. Canon Acema provided spiritual guidance to students and staff, Mr. Opiyo was instrumental in the university’s sports programs, and Mr. Acidri was a dedicated staff member responsible for their safe travel.
The Vice Chancellor’s statement concluded with a simple tribute: “May their souls rest in eternal peace.” The university community now comes together to grieve the profound loss as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
