Drama Erupts in Kinkizi East as Rival Accuses Minister Baryomunsi of Bribery in NRM Primaries
Kanungu, Uganda — A dramatic moment unfolded during a public event in Kinkizi East when Akampurira Akampa, a former contestant in the recently concluded NRM parliamentary primaries, openly accused incumbent MP and ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi of electoral malpractice.
In a video that has since gone viral, a visibly amused Dr. Baryomunsi looked on as Akampa passionately alleged that the minister bribed all his polling agents. Akampa claimed the agents abandoned their duties due to the alleged payoffs, which he believes led to his defeat in the primaries.
Dr. Baryomunsi, however, swiftly dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and a “desperate attempt to seek attention.” He urged all aggrieved candidates to respect the will of the people and focus on unity within the ruling party ahead of the 2026 General Election.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) officially declared Dr. Baryomunsi the party’s flag bearer for Kinkizi East after the primaries, setting him on course to defend his seat in the upcoming national polls.
The incident highlights growing tensions within local NRM politics, with calls from some quarters for internal mechanisms to address grievances emerging from party elections.
