KAMPALA – The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, had a narrow escape on Saturday evening when a trailer swerved into her convoy on the busy Kampala-Jinja Highway.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 pm in the Mukono District as Speaker Among was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District. According to reports, her driver took swift evasive action, pulling the vehicle to the edge of the road to avoid a collision. No injuries or damage were reported from the convoy.
Police subsequently detained the trailer driver, 32-year-old Lubeğa Ivan, and his co-driver, Waiswa Amis, for questioning. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the near-accident, with potential factors being considered, including driver error or a possible mechanical failure.
The incident was later confirmed by Chris Obore, who stated on the social media platform X that the Speaker’s car “survived being hit by a Trailer.” He also noted that Speaker Among was returning from a campaign event for President Museveni in her capacity as Second Vice Chair for the NRM (Female).
This event has once again brought Uganda’s persistent highway safety challenges into the spotlight. The investigation into Saturday’s scare is ongoing.
