Section of Karuma-Kamdini Road Collapses, Heavy Trucks Diverted

KAMPALA – The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued an urgent traffic advisory following a significant road failure on a key section of the Gulu Highway.
The incident occurred along the Karuma to Kamdini road, approximately one kilometer from the Karuma junction towards Olwiyo/Pakwach. According to a statement released by the Ministry on Sunday, November 2nd, preliminary investigations point to recent heavy rains as the cause, which led to an embankment failure.
In response to the damage, the affected section has been immediately cordoned off to ensure public safety. Traffic flow is currently being managed on a single lane, which is expected to cause significant delays for motorists.
Authorities have assured the public that restoration works are being mobilized to repair the damaged section as soon as possible.
Diversion for Heavy Goods Vehicles
To ease congestion and ensure stability at the compromised site, the Ministry has mandated a diversion for all heavy trucks and trailers. Drivers of such vehicles are instructed to divert at the Karuma–Pakwach junction (URA checkpoint).
From there, they should proceed to Olwiyo Trading Centre, which is about 51 km from the Karuma Junction. At Olwiyo, drivers should turn right to connect through Anaka and continue their journey to Gulu—a diversion route of approximately 62 kilometers.
Call for Caution
The Ministry is urging all motorists, especially those using the single open lane, to exercise extreme caution. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed and strictly follow all instructions from traffic controllers at the site.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation as we undertake these emergency interventions,” the Ministry’s statement concluded.
Travelers on the Gulu Highway are advised to plan for extra journey time and monitor official channels for further updates.
