Emergency Diversion on Gulu Highway as Section of Karuma-Kamdini Road Collapses

KAMPALA – The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued an urgent traffic advisory following the significant deterioration of a key section of the Karuma-Kamdini road on the Gulu Highway.
The affected area, located approximately one kilometre from the Karuma–Olwiyo/Pakwach junction (near the URA checkpoint on the Kampala side), has worsened due to persistent heavy rains. Officials report that more than half of the road carriageway has now been compromised, creating a hazardous situation for all vehicles.
“The failure continues to widen due to the persistent heavy rains impacting the embankment,” the Ministry stated in a public notice dated November 16, 2025. “For public safety, the section is now hoarded off as we mobilize for emergency restoration works.”
Diversion Route for All Traffic
To ensure the safety of motorists, the Ministry has mandated a full diversion for all vehicles.
· From Kampala towards Gulu: Vehicles are advised to divert at the Karuma–Pakwach junction (URA checkpoint) and proceed to Olwiyo Trading Centre (approx. 51 km). From Olwiyo, drivers should turn right and continue through Anaka to Gulu (approx. 62 km).
· From Gulu towards Kampala: The same route is to be followed in reverse.
The Ministry has urged all motorists to strictly avoid the collapsed section and use the designated alternative route.
“We regret the inconvenience caused,” the statement concluded, adding that further updates will be provided as emergency restoration work progresses.
The advisory was signed by Bageya Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport.
