Hon. Basalirwa Granted Leave to Introduce Kadhi’s Courts Bill 2025
Parliament has granted Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, the Member of Parliament for Bugiri Municipality, leave to introduce the Kadhi’s Courts (Private Member’s) Bill 2025.
The proposed legislation seeks to formalize Islamic legal procedures in Uganda, providing a legal framework for the establishment and operation of Kadhi’s Courts. These courts, traditionally presided over by Muslim clerics, handle matters relating to Islamic family law, inheritance, and other civil issues within the Muslim community.
Hon. Basalirwa noted that the bill aims to address the current lack of statutory recognition for Kadhi’s Courts, ensuring their operations are consistent with national laws while respecting religious freedoms.
If passed, the legislation is expected to enhance access to justice for Muslim communities and clarify the jurisdiction and procedures of Kadhi’s Courts within Uganda’s legal system.
