
AU Commission Chair Commends Uganda’s Election, Congratulates President Museveni on Re-election
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 17 January 2026
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has issued a formal commendation for the conduct of the recent presidential elections in Uganda and extended congratulations to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.
According to a press release from the AU’s Information and Communication Directorate, President Museveni secured 71.61% of the votes cast in the election held on 15 January 2026.
Chairperson Youssouf expressed sincere appreciation to H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, for his “sterling leadership” of the Joint African Union, Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission deployed to Uganda.
The statement further reiterates the African Union Commission’s commitment to supporting the promotion of democracy and effective governance across the continent. Chairperson Youssouf applauded the people of Uganda for their dedication to “consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development.”
The African Union’s focus for 2025, as noted in the release, is the “Year of Reparations: Justice for Africans & People of African Descent through Reparations.”
