Ghana Grants Citizenship to Global Streamer IShowSpeed After Heritage Revelation
Accra, Ghana – In a move blending digital celebrity with national identity, the Ghanaian government has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to the hugely popular American streamer, IShowSpeed. The decision follows the influencer’s recent 28-day tour of 20 African nations, during which he revealed his maternal lineage is Ghanaian.
The streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., boasts over 50 million subscribers on YouTube. His extensive tour was framed as a journey to connect with his roots and use his massive platform to showcase Africa’s diversity to a global audience.
The approval was confirmed by Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, with Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey publicly endorsing the influencer. She described IShowSpeed as a “worthy ambassador for Ghana,” citing his proactive effort to explore the continent and his genuine ties to the West African nation through his mother.
“This is an acknowledgment of his desire to embrace his heritage and his potential to positively represent Ghana on the world stage,” a ministry spokesperson stated.
The grant of citizenship highlights Ghana’s continued strategy of engaging the global African diaspora, encouraging cultural and economic ties. The country has, in recent years, positioned itself as a welcoming hub for diasporans seeking to reclaim or strengthen their connections to the continent through initiatives like the “Year of Return.”
IShowSpeed’s tour, documented for his millions of followers, included visits to landmarks, cultural exchanges, and collaborations with local creators. His receipt of a Ghanaian passport marks a formalization of his declared identity and is likely to be celebrated by his extensive fanbase, both in Ghana and worldwide.
The streamer has not yet commented on the specific timing for collecting the passport but is expected to incorporate this new chapter into his content, further amplifying the connection between global digital culture and national heritage.
