Ghana High Court Grants Bail to Alleged $8M Romance Scam Suspect Wanted by US
ACCRA, Ghana – Ghana’s High Court has granted bail to Frederick Kumi, a 31-year-old alleged fraud suspect known widely as Abu Trica, who is wanted by the United States in connection with an $8 million romance scam targeting elderly Americans.
Kumi’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the development in a Facebook post, stating that the court approved bail for his client after several months in custody. The suspect has been detained since his arrest in December 2025.
Kumi is currently challenging efforts to extradite him to the United States, where he faces federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. US prosecutors allege that he used artificial intelligence to generate fake identities, then deployed those personas on social media and dating platforms to defraud older victims.
The case highlights the growing use of AI technology in cyber-enabled financial crimes, particularly romance scams, which have cost victims billions of dollars in recent years.
