Tooro Prime Minister Urges President Museveni to Honor King Oyo Stadium Pledge

Fort Portal, Uganda – The Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki, has made a heartfelt appeal to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to fulfill the government’s long-standing pledge to construct a modern stadium in Fort Portal and name it after the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV .

In a statement posted on his official social media handles, Rwomire emphasized that this is the right moment to honor the promise made to the people of Tooro . The appeal comes shortly after the untimely passing of the 34-year-old monarch .

A Generous Donation for a Dream Project

The request is anchored on the late King’s remarkable gesture of generosity in 2026. When the government sought land for the proposed stadium following the collapse of previous sites, His Majesty personally answered the call by donating 50 acres of his private land to facilitate the project .

The donation was officially handed over to the State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, at the Tooro Kingdom headquarters in Muchwa, Fort Portal City, on March 31, 2026 . The land was offered to support sports development and youth empowerment in the region .

The project holds significant historical context. President Museveni first pledged to build a modern stadium in Fort Portal back in 2018 . However, initial plans to redevelop Buhinga Stadium stalled due to insufficient land. A subsequent site identified at Kyembogo in Busoro Sub-county also faced challenges after the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) claimed ownership of the land .

The late King’s intervention, which came following a meeting with President Museveni in 2025, removed this major obstacle . “He did so because he believed deeply in this project and looked forward to seeing a modern stadium built for his people,” Rwomire stated .

A Call to Honor Legacy

Tragically, King Oyo, who had reportedly been battling aggressive cancer, did not live to witness the realization of this dream .

“I therefore humbly appeal to you to honour this pledge and make the King Oyo Stadium a reality,” Rwomire said. “Completing this stadium and naming it in his honour would be a fitting and lasting tribute to a King who gave his own land to make the project possible” .

The Prime Minister noted that the stadium would not only preserve the King’s memory but also create an important sporting and development legacy for the young people of Tooro and Uganda . He added that such a project would ensure that “His Majesty’s generosity, vision and love for his people live on for generations” .

Moving Forward

Following the land handover earlier this year, the National Council of Sports and government technical teams committed to conducting feasibility studies to assess the site and begin planning processes . The government also indicated that the facility’s design would incorporate Tooro’s cultural heritage and be considered in the national budget .

With the late King’s generous contribution unlocking the project’s potential, the pressure is now on the government to transform this vision into reality and honor a monarch who gave his own land for the betterment of his people .
