Tooro Kingdom Succession Secured: Late King Oyo’s 2022 Will Names Heir to the Throne
The line of succession for the Tooro Kingdom has been clearly set out in the 2022 Last Will and Testament of His Majesty Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro, who passed away at age 34 in August 2026 .
The Will, made and executed on 14th September 2022 at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, Uganda, establishes a comprehensive framework for the administration of the late monarch’s estate and explicitly addresses the appointment of his successor .
Clear Succession Provisions
Article X of the Will declares that if the King is survived by a “Son lawfully recognised as my biological Son,” that son shall be appointed as heir to the Throne of the Kingdom of Tooro . The provision aligns with Section 4 of the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011, and the customs and traditions of the Tooro Kingdom.
This formal documentation comes amid public discussion about succession following the King’s untimely death. While the King reportedly did not formally marry, Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed that continuity of the crown is assured, with a prince to be formally named as heir in accordance with Tooro traditions .
Estate Administration Framework
The Will also establishes detailed protocols for managing the King’s personal estate, distinguishing clearly between personal assets, Kingdom property, and institutional holdings. Article IX mandates that the Executor maintain proper records and conduct administration with “transparency, dignity, prudence and appropriate confidentiality” .
Clause 8.2 emphasises that “long-term value preservation and business continuity should be preferred to forced or immediate liquidation” where reasonably practicable, demonstrating foresight in protecting the Kingdom’s interests .
Kingdom Mourning
The late King, who ascended to the throne at just three years old in 1995 and was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch , passed away in the United States where he was receiving treatment for cancer . His body has been repatriated to Uganda, with an official funeral scheduled at Karambi Royal Burial Grounds .
