NUP Petitions Against UPDF Amendment Act Over Civilian Trials
KAMPALA – Leaders from the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, have petitioned against the recently enacted UPDF Amendment Act.
The petition challenges provisions that allow the trial of civilians in military courts, a practice NUP argues was previously quashed by the Supreme Court. The party further contends that the manner in which the amendment was passed in Parliament was irregular and therefore illegal.
Rubongoya said the move seeks to protect the constitutional rights of civilians and prevent what he described as “unlawful encroachment” by the military on civil justice processes.
The matter is now expected to proceed to court for determination.
