Kampala city businessman, Hamis Kiggundu, has kick-started a massive cleanup operation along the downstream section of the Nakivubo drainage channel, setting the stage for a transformative project aimed at modernizing one of the city’s most neglected areas.
For years, the drainage channel had turned into a hotspot for garbage dumping and criminal activity, worsened by prolonged political wrangles within the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). Many residents had raised concerns about the deteriorating state of the area, which posed health and security risks.
Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, chose to ignore the ongoing political fights led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and instead focused on practical action. His initiative seeks not only to restore cleanliness but also to pave the way for broader redevelopment.
“This project is about reclaiming our city spaces from decay and transforming them into productive, safe, and modern environments,” Kiggundu stated during the launch.
The cleanup marks the beginning of a larger plan that will see the Nakivubo corridor revamped to improve urban sanitation, security, and aesthetics. Many city dwellers have since welcomed the businessman’s efforts, noting that the private sector’s involvement could be the turning point in addressing Kampala’s long-standing urban management challenges.
