Toro Kingdom Selects George Desmond Kamurasi as Successor to Late King Oyo
Fort Portal, Uganda – September 4, 2026 – The Royal Succession Committee of Toro Kingdom has officially selected George Desmond Kamurasi (36) as the next king of Toro, succeeding his late cousin, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away on August 26, 2026, in Texas, USA.
The 21-member committee, chaired by Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, was constituted by the Royal Clan of Toro (Ababiito) on August 28, 2026. Since August 31, the committee has convened daily to deliberate on the succession. Today’s session, held at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., saw 18 members in attendance, with 15 casting their votes in favor of George Kamurasi.
George Kamurasi is the son of George Desmond (Jimmy) Mugenyi, younger brother to the late Patrick David Mathew Olimi Kaboyo II. According to the will of his late grandfather, His Majesty King George Rukidi III, Kamurasi was second in line to the throne after Olimi Kaboyo II.
In a statement this evening, security and political leaders confirmed their endorsement of the committee’s decision. The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the UDPF, who also serves as Chairman of the PLU, General Muhoozi Keinerugaba, fully endorsed the choice, stating that it aligns with the customs, precedents, and succession laws of Toro. General Keinerugaba also conveyed that President Yoweri Museveni supports the committee’s decision.
To ensure a smooth transition, the President dispatched a team led by a senior cabinet minister to Fort Portal for extensive consultations with key stakeholders. The committee was ultimately convinced that there is broad consensus around Kamurasi’s succession.
Meanwhile, Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi has indicated that, in line with tradition, the formal public announcement will be made after the burial of the late king. However, this statement was issued preemptively to curb social media speculation and prevent possible confusion.
The kingdom now awaits the Omusuuga’s official address to the Babiito clan leaders, marking the next step in formalizing the succession.
