From Stigma to Parliament: Gloria Nawanyaga’s Journey of Resilience and a Bid for Youth Representation

KAMPALA, Uganda – Gloria Nawanyaga’s story is not just one of personal triumph, but a powerful testament to turning profound adversity into a force for change. Now, she is channeling that transformative energy into a political campaign, vying for the position of Youth Member of Parliament for the Central Region.
Born with HIV through mother-to-child transmission, Nawanyaga’s childhood was marked by the heavy shadow of stigma and discrimination. The journey became exponentially more challenging when she discovered her HIV status at the tender age of eleven, plunging her into a period of fear and self-hatred.
“What began as a journey of fear and self-hate gradually turned into one of courage and empowerment,” Nawanyaga shares, reflecting on her path. Through immense personal strength, she learned to accept herself, embrace her antiretroviral treatment, and found power in using her voice.
This empowerment became the catalyst for a remarkable transformation. She has diligently converted her pain into a clear sense of purpose, defying the bleak future she once envisioned for herself. Today, she stands as a qualified lawyer, a recognized HIV activist, and a community leader who inspires thousands of young people across Uganda.
Her central message is one of defiant hope: that HIV does not define a person’s worth or place a limit on their dreams.
Now, Gloria Nawanyaga is aiming to take her advocacy to the national stage. Her campaign to represent the youth of the Central Region in Uganda’s Parliament is built on the foundation of her lived experience. She positions herself as a authentic vessel for the voices of young people who have faced similar struggles with health, stigma, and hopelessness.
Her slogan, “Vote Nawanyaga Gloria for Youth MP Central Region,” is more than a political call; it is an invitation to elect a representative whose life mission is rooted in resilience, service, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every young person.
With her journey from a despondent child to a lawyer and inspirer, Gloria Nawanyaga is not just asking for votes; she is offering a living example of what is possible, promising to fight in parliament for a future where no young Ugandan feels defined by their circumstances.
