Uganda Police Confirm Death of Afrigo Band Founder Moses Matovu
Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Police Force has officially confirmed the death of veteran saxophonist and Afrigo Band founder Moses Matovu, affectionately known as ‘Papa Moi’. The 75-year-old music icon was fatally attacked this morning, September 24, 2026.
According to a statement released by the Uganda Police Force, police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder. Matovu was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants at Kibuli Market Zone B, in Makindye Division, Kampala District. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries.
The police report states that efforts are currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants. “Our task team is currently at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read. “More details will be shared as the investigation progresses.”
The news sent shockwaves through Uganda’s music community. Matovu was a towering figure in the industry, having formed the Afrigo Band in 1975—Uganda’s longest-running live band. Over decades, he shaped the country’s musical landscape, blending jazz, rumba, and local rhythms. Just days before his death, he had performed with the band, making the sudden news of his passing all the more devastating.
Initial reports of the tragedy circulated widely on social media before the official police confirmation. Early posts, including one from social media commentator KASUKU (@Kasuku256), stated that Matovu was attacked and hit on the head, losing a significant amount of blood before being rushed to Kibuli Hospital. Some online reports cited a call from bandmate Recheal Magoola confirming the death, though at the time, police, hospital, and family had offered no official word.
As tributes pour in mourning his immense contribution to Uganda’s cultural heritage, authorities are urging the public to rely on verified facts as the investigation into the brutal attack continues.
