KAMPALA, Uganda — The verified X (formerly Twitter) account previously belonging to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been transferred to a news startup, reports indicate.
According to information obtained, the account, which was previously accessible via the handle @AnitahAmong, is now operating under the handle @GlobalAfricaHQ under the name “Global Africa Brief.”
The transition, which reportedly took place last weekend, sees the account retain its substantial following of approximately 614,000 users—the same number of followers accumulated during Among’s tenure on the platform.
The rebranding follows the deletion of all previous posts from the former Speaker’s time in office. The account’s biography has also been updated to reflect its new editorial direction, now reading: “The Brief Beyond Headlines.”
Reports suggest that government critic and journalist Remmy Bahati is the individual behind the takeover of the account, now steering its content toward the new media venture.
The transfer of the high-profile account comes amidst a backdrop of controversy involving the former Speaker’s family. In October 2022, armed men in plain clothes raided her father’s home in Fort Portal, taking her brother, Kelvin Katungi, and cousin, Latif Mugume.
At the time, the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) stated that five people had been arrested in connection with the incident, citing charges of impersonation and illegal possession of a firearm.
Neither Remmy Bahati nor representatives for Anita Among have issued a formal statement regarding the transfer of the social media asset. The development marks a significant shift in the digital landscape, as a major political communication channel is repurposed into an independent news outlet.
