
Kingdom in Mourning: Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV Passes Away at 34
Fort Portal, Uganda – The Tooro Kingdom and the nation of Uganda are in deep mourning following the passing of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the revered King of Tooro. The monarch passed away on the evening of August 27, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., at the age of 34 .
The announcement of the King’s death was made through an official statement by the Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) of Tooro Kingdom, Mr. Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who conveyed the news with profound sadness .
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening,” the Prime Minister stated. “This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda. Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire.”
A Reign Marked by Youth and Dedication
Born on April 16, 1992, King Oyo ascended to the throne in 1995 at the tender age of just three years old, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III . His ascension made him one of the youngest reigning monarchs in the world. Due to his youth, a regency managed the kingdom’s affairs until he assumed full operational control upon turning 18 in 2010 .
Throughout his 31-year reign, the late Omukama was a prominent symbol of Tooro’s cultural heritage and a dedicated advocate for youth empowerment, education, and health causes . He served as a global ambassador for HIV/AIDS awareness and launched the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 development framework to guide the kingdom’s future .
Health Concerns and Succession
News of the King’s passing comes after a period of health uncertainty. Just hours before the official announcement, Tooro Kingdom officials had confirmed that the monarch was in critical condition and appealed to the public for prayers . Reports indicated he was receiving medical treatment abroad .
In his official statement, Prime Minister Rwomiire sought to reassure the people of Tooro about the future, emphasizing that the continuity of the Crown is assured. He announced that the late King leaves behind a Prince as his heir .
“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” the Prime Minister confirmed .
The Prime Minister called upon the people of Tooro to remain united, calm, and prayerful during this difficult period of mourning. An official statement regarding funeral and mourning arrangements is expected to be released in due course . The kingdom’s leadership has urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the traditions of the Royal Family during this transition .
