Wicknell Chivayo and wife Lucy Muteke to be buried in Harare on Thursday after fatal helicopter crash
HARARE, Zimbabwe — The funeral of prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke will take place in Harare on Thursday, his family says.
The couple and three others were killed in a helicopter crash in Marondera, some 70km east of the city, on September 30.
Chivayo and Muteke will be buried side by side, the family said. Their incomplete remains were recovered from the scene where the aircraft went down in misty conditions and caught fire.
The two pilots who died were due to be laid to rest on Monday. The fifth victim was Muteke’s security aide. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Chivayo was a prominent and controversial figure with close ties to Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other African leaders. Most of his publicly documented wealth appeared to have come from large government and public sector projects.
Chivayo courted accusations of corruption, flaunted his luxury lifestyle on social media and was widely known for his philanthropy.
