Court Finally Settles Nine-Month Dispute as Couple’s Bodies Remain Frozen in Ugandan Mortuary
KAMPALA, Uganda — The High Court of Uganda has brought an end to a protracted and macabre family dispute, ruling on the fate of a couple whose bodies have lain frozen in a funeral home for more than nine months.
Justice Celia Nagawa delivered the decision yesterday, granting Mark Mutaaga Kabenge, a Swiss national and the couple’s biological son, final authority over how and where his parents will be laid to rest.
The court further ordered the Attorney General and Uganda Police to ensure the remains are released from the funeral home within 48 hours.
According to sources close to the family, Kabenge plans to cremate the bodies and return the ashes to Switzerland for a dignified burial.
The ruling brings some resolution to an emotionally charged case, but deep fears remain among the couple’s other children. Sources indicate that the siblings live in terror, believing they could meet the same fate as their parents — whose killers have yet to be arrested.
“They fear to be killed in the same way,” a source said, adding that the absence of any arrests has left the family convinced the perpetrators remain at large and could strike again.
Justice Nagawa’s decision now clears the path for the bodies’ release, though the unresolved criminal investigation continues to cast a dark shadow over the family’s efforts to find closure.
