Charlotte Kainerugaba Launches National Blood Donation Drive to Combat Maternal Deaths in Uganda
KAMPALA, Uganda — In a powerful show of commitment to saving mothers’ lives, Mrs. Charlotte Kainerugaba, the PLU First Lady, officially launched the National Blood Donation Drive and Awareness Campaign at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds this morning.
The initiative targets postpartum haemorrhage—excessive bleeding after childbirth—which remains one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Uganda, accounting for an estimated 25–35% of cases. The campaign, held in partnership with Nakasero Blood Bank, comes at a critical time when the country faces a blood shortage of 150,000 units annually against a required 500,000 units.
