Earth Tremor Shakes Uganda: 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded in Lake Kyoga Region

Kampala, Uganda – June 1, 2026 – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) has confirmed that a light to moderate earth tremor measuring 4.4 on the Richter Scale struck parts of Uganda on the evening of Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The tremor occurred at exactly 9:19:21 PM local time and was felt across a wide geographical area, including Kampala, Lira, Apac, Gulu, Nakasongola, Masindi, Mbale, Jinja, the Lake Victoria region, the Lake Kyoga region, and parts of Northern Uganda.
According to preliminary analysis by the National Seismological Network, the earthquake’s epicentre was located within the Lake Kyoga region—approximately 25 kilometres north of Nakasongola Town and 53 kilometres east of Masindi Port—at a shallow focal depth of about 10 kilometres. The shallowness of the quake contributed to it being felt over such a broad area.
The Ministry attributes the seismic event to movements along the Aswa Shear Zone (Aswa Lineament), a major geological structure that traverses parts of Uganda. Uganda lies within the western branch of the East African Rift System and experiences occasional earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
Reassuring the public, the Ministry stated that no significant damage to infrastructure or property, nor any loss of life, has been reported so far. Government agencies continue to monitor the situation and assess potential impacts.
Safety Advisory from MEMD:
· Indoors: Seek refuge under strong furniture, stay away from windows and falling objects, and avoid using elevators.
· Outdoors: Move to open areas away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
· Motorists: Stop safely and remain alert to potential hazards.
The Ministry, through its Seismological Monitoring Network, will continue to closely monitor seismic activity across the country and provide timely updates as necessary.
