Telecommunications firm MTN Uganda has confirmed that a significant power failure at one of its data centres caused today’s service interruptions across the country.
The outage, which occurred earlier on Sunday, disrupted multiple services including voice calls, internet connectivity, and mobile money transactions for a portion of MTN’s customer base.
In an official communication posted on X, the company explained the root cause of the technical difficulties.
“Following a major power outage at one of our data centres earlier today, a segment of our customers experienced disruptions to voice, data and MoMo services,” MTN said.
The company moved quickly to reassure its subscribers, stating that technical teams are already on the ground working to resolve the issue.
“Service restoration is underway, and our technical teams are working to restore all affected services as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding,” the statement added.
The explanation brings clarity to customers who were left frustrated after being unable to access essential services ranging from internet browsing to sending money via mobile and making regular phone calls.
Banking Services Impacted
The network disruption also affected Stanbic Bank Uganda, with the financial institution confirming that its digital channels are currently unavailable.
Stanbic’s customer service team acknowledged the challenges, informing clients that online banking services have been temporarily affected.
Customers of both MTN and Stanbic are advised to monitor official channels for updates as restoration work continues.
