UCC Seeks Public Input on Next Media’s Bid to Acquire Capital FM
Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a public notice inviting comments regarding a major proposed transaction in the broadcasting sector. The regulator is currently reviewing an application for the transfer of licenses from Capital FM (2015) Limited to Next Media Services Limited and prominent media proprietor Kin Kariisa.
According to the notice dated Monday, 14th September 2026, the application seeks approval for a change in control of Capital FM. If approved, the transaction will result in Next Media Services Limited and Kin Ibrahim Kariisa acquiring 100% ownership and control of Capital FM (2015) Limited.
Background of the Entities
The public notice outlines the current shareholding structures of the involved parties. Capital FM (2015) Limited currently holds nine radio broadcasting licenses and is owned by a consortium of shareholders, including Karuhanga Hannington Rubarenza (12.5%), Patrick Quarcoo (37.6%), Samuel Wanzunula Mangaali (9.3%), Albert Ayorinde Ajayi (2.7%), and William Edward Cathcart (37.6%).
Next Media Services Limited, which holds six broadcasting licenses, is currently owned by Kin Ibrahim Kariisa (99.9%) and Next Media Group FZCO (0.1%). The notice confirms that the shareholding in Next Media Services Limited will remain unchanged following the transaction.
Regulatory Process and Public Interest
The application is being processed in accordance with Section 43 of the Uganda Communications Act, Cap 103, and Regulation 102 of the Uganda Communications (Licensing) Regulations, 2019.
In compliance with Section 39(2)(d) of the Act, the Commission is required to consider public interest before determining whether to approve the transfer. Consequently, the UCC is requesting written comments from the public regarding the proposed acquisition.
