Uganda Launches Mobile Money Toll Payments on Kampala-Entebbe Expressway
The Ugandan government has officially launched a new cashless payment system for the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, allowing motorists to pay tolls using Mobile Money.
The initiative, announced by the Government of Uganda on X (formerly Twitter), is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Works and Transport, expressway operator KEE_UG, and MTN’s MoMo. The service allows motorists to use designated lanes—Lane 4 or Lane 5—at the Buseqa, Kajjansi, and Mpala toll plazas.
How It Works
According to official guidelines, the process is designed to be quick and convenient:
- Use Designated Lanes: Motorists must use Lane 4 or Lane 5 at the toll plaza.
- Provide Phone Number: The driver gives their mobile phone number to the toll agent.
- Check Phone: A Mobile Money payment prompt is sent to the driver’s phone.
- Approve Payment: The driver checks the payment details and enters their Mobile Money PIN to confirm.
- Proceed: Once the payment is confirmed, the toll gate opens, and the driver can continue their journey.
Flexibility and Cost
The new system works across different telecommunications networks, adding flexibility beyond traditional cash or prepaid cards. For light vehicles, the toll rate remains at Shs5,000 per trip. The government promotes the new system as “Convenient. Cashless. Easy.”
Addressing Concerns
Officials addressed potential concerns about traffic delays at the toll gates by noting the implementation of reserved lanes and the success of prior pilots.
Ministry communicator Allan Ssempembwa Kyobe called the launch a “team milestone” ahead of his transition, with Ainebyoona Emmanuel stepping into the role.
