Besigye Family Mourns Loss of Six-Year-Old Grandson Rai
The family of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye is in mourning following the tragic passing of his six-year-old grandson, Righteous Ariho, affectionately known as Rai. The young boy passed away early Thursday in Mulago Hospital’s ICU.
Rai was the sole grandson of Dr. Besigye. His father shared an emotional tribute, remembering Rai—who was born in March 2020—as the joy of parenthood and now a guardian angel.
While Dr. Besigye remains detained in Luzira Prison and will be unable to attend the burial, supporters and public figures have sent an outpouring of condolences. The family has asked for prayers amid their grief.
In a heartfelt post on X, Nyanjura Doreen Omu expressed the family’s sorrow: “Grief has stricken. Our leader and patriarch, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has lost his only grandson, Righ Ariho Ampa. Praying for God’s comfort and strength for @AdamAmpaBesigye and the entire family for this unbearable and painful loss.”
Ariho will be laid to rest this Sunday, September 27, 2026, in Rwakabengo, Rukungiri.
