Lira, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed lawyers involved in the Lango cattle compensation case to step aside, instructing the cattle owners to instead appoint a representative to collect the funds on their behalf.
The President’s directive came during his engagement with community members, where concerns were raised over the alleged mismanagement of the compensation scheme meant for victims of past insurgencies. One outspoken cattle owner told the President: “Your Excellency, the corruption and the syndicate stealing this cattle compensation money starts from your office.”
In a gesture of personal support, President Museveni handed UGX 20 million to a local Lango woman to assist with her medical surgery. He also donated a Tuk-Tuk to the area’s LC1 Chairman to facilitate community mobility and service delivery.
Beyond immediate interventions, the Head of State pledged wider development support for the Lango sub-region. These included a new bus for Lango footballers, financial assistance to the Agong Foundation for its cultural and skills development programs, and backing for initiatives by Lango cultural leaders to strengthen unity and heritage preservation.
The pledges come at a time when residents have been voicing frustrations over delayed cattle compensation payments and perceived corruption in the process. Museveni’s latest orders and donations are seen as efforts to restore confidence and address long-standing grievances in the region.
