KAMPALA – The Ugandan community is in mourning and seeking answers following the horrific death of a young Ugandan woman in India. The victim, identified only as Essey, was reportedly gang-raped and brutally murdered on Monday, casting a dark shadow on the promises of opportunity abroad.

According to sources close to the matter, Essey had recently left her home in Kampala for India, driven by the hope of finding better prospects and employment. Tragically, the reality she encountered was starkly different from the assurances given by the individuals who facilitated her travel.
“It’s a devastating situation. She went there looking for a better life, but things were not as she was told by those who took her there,” a source familiar with the case revealed. The details surrounding the agents who recruited her and the circumstances of her arrival remain unclear.
Indian authorities are believed to be investigating the case as a murder following a sexual assault. However, specific details regarding the investigation, potential suspects, or the exact location of the incident have not yet been officially disclosed.
A profound uncertainty now hangs over her final rites. It is not yet clear whether Essey’s remains will be repatriated back to Kampala to allow her family and community to give her a traditional burial, or if she will be cremated in India.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan diaspora and serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities and dangers faced by migrants seeking opportunities overseas. It has also sparked urgent calls for greater scrutiny of overseas recruitment agencies and stronger consular protection for citizens abroad.
The Ugandan embassy in New Delhi is yet to release an official statement as efforts to contact the victim’s family and navigate the legal proceedings in India continue.
