WAKISO, UGANDA – A man has died after being electrocuted while attempting to illegally tap electricity from a high-voltage power line in Nateete, Wakiso District.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 PM on Friday, September 12, 2025, along Sentema Road at Nakuwade-Mpawo. The deceased has been identified as Gerald Mutalya, a local resident of Nakuwade.
According to a press release from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), Mutalya was attempting an illegal connection on a critical 33kV feeder that originates from the Mutundwe Substation. This type of line carries extremely high voltage, capable of causing fatal injuries.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was not employed by UEDCL or any of its contracted companies authorized to perform maintenance on the distribution grid,” the UEDCL statement clarified, distancing the utility company from the individual’s actions.
The body of the deceased was recovered from the scene. Police have registered a case of electrocution at the Nateete Police Station and have opened an investigation into the incident.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the extreme dangers associated with illegal power connections. UEDCL and other authorities consistently warn the public that tampering with electrical infrastructure not only constitutes a serious crime but also carries a high risk of electrocution, fires, and damage to property.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
