KAMPALA – In a dramatic operation that has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s security establishment, a team of bodyguards assigned to Senior Presidential Advisor and retired Lieutenant General Proscovia Nalweyiso have been arrested and are being held at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Kasenyi.

According to highly placed security sources, the bodyguards were apprehended in Kampala by SFC commandos acting on the direct orders of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and former Commander of the SFC. The operatives were swiftly transported to the highly fortified SFC base, where they are currently detained in military cells, commonly referred to as “coolers.”
The reason for their detention remains shrouded in secrecy, officially described only as a “security matter.” The operation is reported to have left Gen. Nalweyiso, a revered and long-serving figure in the Ugandan military, deeply shocked.
In a swift response, Gen. Nalweyiso personally drove to the SFC headquarters in Kasenyi—a site known for its restricted access—to seek an immediate audience with Gen. Muhoozi. Sources indicate she was fortunate to be granted entry past the heavy security.
However, her mission for answers was unsuccessful. Instead of meeting with Gen. Muhoozi directly, she was received at the reception by an SFC colonel. The officer reportedly informed her that the arrest of her staff was indeed related to an undisclosed security issue and that details would be revealed to her at a later date.
The explanation offered little solace. Eyewitnesses described the veteran general as being left “devastated” by the encounter. Without obtaining any concrete answers or securing the release of her personnel, she departed the base and returned to Kampala.
The incident marks a significant and unusual public fissure within the upper echelons of Uganda’s security apparatus. Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Proscovia Nalweyiso is a historical figure in the National Resistance Army and has been a trusted confidante of President Yoweri Museveni for decades. The detention of her close protection team by forces under the command of the President’s son has sparked intense speculation and anxiety within security and political circles.
Neither the UPDF nor the SFC has issued an official statement regarding the operation or the reasons behind it. The continued detention of the bodyguards under the veil of a “security matter” leaves a pressing question mark over the circumstances that led to such a drastic action against the team of a top-ranking general.
