President Museveni Endorses Establishment of Prepaid Water Meter Factory in Uganda
August 2, 2025 – Kampala, Uganda
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today officially endorsed the establishment of a prepaid water meter manufacturing factory in Uganda, a major step towards enhancing local industrial capacity and improving access to clean water nationwide.
The new factory is expected to produce high-quality prepaid water meters, reducing the country’s reliance on imports while supporting government efforts to extend efficient water services to underserved communities.
Speaking at the endorsement event, President Museveni emphasized the importance of local manufacturing in transforming Uganda’s economy and creating jobs. He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to promote import substitution and industrialization under Vision 2040.
“This project is a timely intervention that will not only boost our manufacturing sector but also ensure accountability and efficiency in water usage across the country,” Museveni said.
The prepaid water meter technology allows consumers to manage and monitor their water consumption, ensuring transparency in billing and reducing wastage. The meters are expected to benefit urban and rural areas alike, particularly where utility service management has been a challenge.
Government officials, private sector stakeholders, and representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment welcomed the development, pledging full support towards its implementation.
The factory is slated to begin operations in early 2026, with plans to supply meters both for the domestic market and regional exports.
