Uganda has positioned itself as Africa’s next mineral investment frontier at the 14th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference, held at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Under the theme “Sustainable Mineral Development Through Collaboration, Innovation and Green Transitions,” the event brought together over 1,500 delegates, including government officials, international investors, and industry experts.

Hon. Canon Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, opened the conference with a powerful declaration: “Uganda is blessed with gold, copper, iron ore, lithium, cobalt, graphite, rare earths, and a dynamic youthful population.” She emphasized the country’s goal to grow its economy tenfold by 2040 through value addition, industrialization, and strategic partnerships.

Key Developments and Investment Potential
The ministry reports that Uganda hosts more than 50 mineral types, with significant reserves including 31 million tonnes of gold, 560 million tonnes of iron ore, and 7.8 million tonnes of copper. Notable milestones highlighted include:

· The launch of Uganda’s first tin smelting and refining plant in Mbarara, capable of processing over 1,000 tonnes annually.
· The Wagagai Gold Mine Refinery, now producing 99.9% pure gold.
· Discovery of high-purity silicon dioxide at Kome Islands, signaling potential for local industrial use.

Global Partnerships and Responsible Mining
International support was underscored by H.E. Lisa Chesney MBE, the British High Commissioner, who revealed that over 40 UK mining companies are eager to collaborate with Uganda. Keynotes from Dr. Abdoul Karim Kabele Camara of Fortuna Mining Corporation warned against the “resource curse,” urging sustainable extraction practices.

Social responsibility took center stage, with Mr. Famari Baroo of Save the Children advocating for an end to child labor in mining. A dedicated Women’s Leadership Breakfast addressed inclusivity, highlighting the need for greater female representation in sector leadership.

Technology and Future Outlook
AI’s role in revolutionizing mineral exploration and resource management was a key topic, with discussions emphasizing innovation for sustainable practices. The conference also featured a critical minerals and geopolitics panel, examining Uganda’s strategic position in global supply chains.

Organized by the Uganda Chamber of Mines (UCEM), the conference reinforced Uganda’s commitment to leveraging its mineral wealth for sustainable economic transformation.
