ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A federal grand jury has indicted former FBI Director James Comey on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional inquiry, stemming from his testimony before the U.S. Senate in 2020.
The indictment, filed on September 25, 2025, in the Eastern District of Virginia, alleges that Comey lied under oath when he denied authorizing leaks related to the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Prosecutors claim that declassified records directly contradict his testimony, showing he directed his chief counsel to share classified memos with journalists in 2017.
Comey, who was famously fired by then-President Donald Trump in May 2017, has denied the charges, labeling them as a form of political retaliation. He is expected to surrender to authorities for arraignment in Alexandria.
The case has drawn an immediate and forceful reaction from former President Trump, who posted statements on his social media platform. “JAMES COMEY IS A DIRTY COP. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote. In a subsequent post, he elaborated, calling Comey a “destroyer of lives” and asserting that the former FBI director had been caught in a “very simple, but IMPORTANT” lie for which “a very big price must be paid.”
The indictment revives one of the most contentious chapters of recent American political history, centering on a key figure in the Trump-Russia probe. The legal proceedings will now move forward as Comey prepares to answer the charges in court.
