‘Love Triangle’ Dispute Triggers Deadly Shootout Among South Sudanese Soldiers, 14 Killed

JUBA, South Sudan – A violent shootout stemming from a suspected personal dispute described by sources as a “love triangle” has left at least 14 South Sudanese soldiers dead and several others wounded, according to reports from the capital, Juba.
The incident began when two soldiers allegedly quarreled after it was discovered they were both romantically involved with the same woman. The argument quickly escalated from a personal spat into a deadly exchange of gunfire.
Sources indicate the violence first erupted in a market area before spreading rapidly to primary checkpoints and nearby barracks, suggesting the initial confrontation drew in other military personnel. The widespread shooting points to a significant and chaotic breakdown of discipline within the unit involved.
In addition to the 14 soldiers killed, five others were injured and are currently receiving treatment at medical facilities in Juba. The violence also reportedly caught one civilian in the crossfire. The condition of the civilian has not yet been confirmed.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges within the security forces and underscores how personal conflicts can spiral into larger tragedies, threatening the safety of both military personnel and civilians.
