ELDORET, Kenya – In a symbolic and visually striking gesture, President William Ruto presided over the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, while wearing the full jungle combat uniform of the military.
Marking his first time in the KDF attire since assuming office as Commander-in-Chief, the President led the events at the Moi Barracks in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
The annual KDF Day commemorates a pivotal moment in Kenya’s history: the 2011 unification of the country’s army, navy, and air force into a single command structure, a key reform enabled by the 2010 Constitution. This year’s observance was held under the theme of enhancing soldier-centric mission readiness.
The celebrations featured traditional military displays, including a parade and a wreath-laying ceremony to honor soldiers who have lost their lives in service to the nation. The event served to recognize the KDF’s sacrifices and its role in ensuring national security and supporting development.
President Ruto’s decision to wear the combat uniform, a departure from the civilian attire typically worn by heads of state at such events, sparked considerable online discussion regarding the symbolism and the nature of civil-military relations.
Officials at the ceremony praised the forces for their professionalism and dedication, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a strong and unified military.
