Ugandan MP Frank Tumwebaze Accuses MTN Uganda of Data Mismanagement, Calls for Regulatory Action
KAMPALA – Frank Tumwebaze, a Member of Parliament and former Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), has publicly accused MTN Uganda of improper interference with subscribers’ data bundles, leading to widespread complaints about rapid and unexplained data depletion.
The allegation was made via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the evening of October 21, 2025. In a direct address to the telecom giant, Tumwebaze expressed his frustration, writing, “@mtnug @mtnug @mtnug, please stop games with my data. I am fed up with you & so should be many others.”
The MP’s statement echoes a growing number of user complaints who have reported losing gigabytes of data overnight or within a few hours, a recurring issue that has sparked previous public campaigns against telecom operators’ practices.
Highlighting the need for a formal recourse mechanism, Tumwebaze called upon the Ministry of ICT (@MoICT_Ug) and the Uganda Communications Commission (@UCC_Official) to urgently establish a communications consumer tribunal. He emphasized that such a body is “envisaged in the law” and is necessary for “aggrieved subscribers to seek justice.”
The public accusation from a high-profile figure like Tumwebaze, who also chairs the Specialized Technical Committee of the African Union, has amplified the issue, putting renewed pressure on both the telecom regulator and the service provider. The incident also brings back into focus previous government promises, such as public free WiFi, which some critics point out remain unfulfilled.
As of now, MTN Uganda has not issued a public response to the MP’s allegations.
