JUBA, South Sudan – October 22, 2025 – In a significant meeting aimed at bolstering cooperation, Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel today met with the United Nations’ top official in the country, Ms. Anita Kiki Gbeho, to discuss critical issues of peace and humanitarian assistance.

The discussions, held in the capital Juba, focused on strengthening the coordination between the South Sudanese government and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Both leaders emphasized the importance of this partnership in sustaining peace efforts across the nation.
A key outcome of the meeting was a firm commitment from the Vice President to ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel and the unimpeded delivery of relief supplies to all communities in need. In a strong statement, VP Dr. Bol Mel assured that the government would take “firm action” against any individuals found to be obstructing humanitarian access.
“Free flow of aid is essential for saving lives and rebuilding livelihoods,” the Vice President remarked, highlighting the critical role of humanitarian assistance in the nation’s recovery.
Ms. Gbeho, who serves as the Deputy Special Representative of UNMISS, as well as the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, engaged in talks that explored practical ways to safeguard aid operations. The meeting underscored the shared priority of ensuring that vital support reaches the most vulnerable populations without obstruction.
VP Dr. Bol Mel also commended the enduring partnership with UNMISS and reiterated the government’s dedication, under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, to working with all “peace-loving partners and stakeholders” to advance national unity and social development.
The high-level dialogue signals a continued effort by the transitional government to collaborate with international partners in addressing the country’s humanitarian and peacebuilding challenges.
