Citizenship Does Not Expire – Gen. Muhoozi Clarifies Amid National ID Renewal Concerns
Kampala, Uganda – August 5, 2025 – The State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, has reassured Ugandans that their citizenship remains intact regardless of the expiration date on their National Identity Cards. Speaking during a parliamentary plenary session, Gen. Muhoozi emphasized that citizenship never expires, and the true proof of one’s citizenship is the National Identification Number (NIN) — not the physical card itself.
“The ten-year validity of the National ID does not affect a person’s status as a citizen. The NIN remains valid for life,” Gen. Muhoozi said, dispelling public concerns sparked by the ongoing mass registration and renewal exercise.
Addressing recent reports of extortion and corruption during the registration process, the minister confirmed that several individuals involved in misconduct have been arrested and their contracts terminated. He assured the public that government is taking firm action to ensure transparency and accountability in the exercise.
The national ID renewal drive has seen an increase in complaints about bribery and illegal fees charged to applicants. Authorities are encouraging citizens to report such incidents through official channels.
Gen. Muhoozi’s remarks were part of a broader effort to build public confidence and clarify misconceptions surrounding the national identification process.
