Trump Arrives in Malaysia to Broker Cambodia-Thailand Peace Deal
KUALA LUMPUR – President Donald J. Trump landed in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, commencing his Asia tour with a high-profile diplomatic mission: overseeing the signing of a historic peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
The deal, which the President proudly claimed to have brokered, aims to resolve a long-standing and occasionally violent border dispute near the Preah Vihear temple. The agreement follows deadly clashes in July and a subsequent U.S.-led ceasefire.
In a post on his social media platform prior to his arrival, President Trump announced the expedited plans for the ceremony, stating, “In order to accommodate everyone for this major event, we will be signing the Peace Deal immediately upon arrival.”
The significant diplomatic event is set against a backdrop of national mourning in Thailand following the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit at the age of 93. President Trump acknowledged the somber occasion in his statement, offering condolences to the “Great People of Thailand.” The timing of the ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is reported to accommodate the period of mourning.
Upon landing, President Trump was greeted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The peace signing coincides with the 47th ASEAN Summit, where leaders are gathering to address a broad agenda of trade, security, and other pressing regional issues, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the diplomatic engagements taking place in the Malaysian capital.
