Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel Resigns from South Sudanese Government

JUBA – Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel has officially announced his departure from his high-level positions in the Government of South Sudan, expressing his “deepest gratitude” to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for the opportunity to serve.

The resignation was announced in a formal letter shared by Dr. Mel on social media. In the communication, he thanked the President for granting him the “privilege to serve the people of South Sudan.”
Dr. Mel held the roles of Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, in addition to being the First Deputy Chairperson of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party. He described holding these responsibilities as “among the greatest honours of my life.”
In his letter, Dr. Mel outlined the key achievements during his tenure. As Vice President, he stated that he worked to advance the President’s vision for a “stable, prosperous, and self-reliant South Sudan.” His cited accomplishments include:
· Attracting new investments and opening doors for private-sector participation.
· Streamlining the collection and use of non-oil revenues to improve “efficiency, accountability, and transparency.”
· Engaging the diplomatic community on economic matters to strengthen South Sudan’s role as a “responsible partner.”
In his party role as First Deputy Chairperson of the SPLM, Dr. Mel said he focused on reviving the party’s structures and reinvigorating grassroots support ahead of the forthcoming general elections, while also contributing to national peace-building efforts.
He credited these achievements to the “enabling environment and steady leadership” consistently fostered by President Kiir.
Dr. Mel also extended his “heartfelt appreciation” to the citizens of South Sudan for their support, noting that their “diligence, patriotism, and enduring hope for a brighter future continue to inspire me deeply.”
Expressing confidence in the nation’s trajectory, the letter concluded with a vote of confidence in President Kiir’s stewardship, stating that he has set South Sudan on the “right path, defined by unity, peace, and inclusive development.”
