Sonko Confronts Son-in-Law in Kitengela Over Alleged Assault on Daughter

KITENGELA, Kenya – Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was involved in a dramatic confrontation with his son-in-law on Saturday, November 16, after his daughter, Salma Mbuvi, reported a violent domestic dispute.
The incident unfolded after Salma placed a distressed call to her mother, claiming her husband had slapped her on the face following a disagreement over what to have for breakfast. Reacting immediately, Sonko drove to the couple’s Kitengela home with his security team.

The ensuing confrontation was captured on video, which Sonko later shared on his social media accounts. In the footage, the former governor is heard questioning the son-in-law, who remained silent, about the repeated violence.
“Why are you beating my daughter?” Sonko demanded. “I pay your kids’ school fees, I’m paying your rent and shopping, why are you beating my daughter?”
He revealed the extensive financial support he provides the family, which includes covering their rent, his grandchildren’s school fees, groceries, and even gifting the couple a Range Rover.
Throughout the heated exchange, Sonko was seen restraining his security team from physically retaliating, insisting that violence was not the solution. He later took his daughter and her children away from the home and arranged a medical check-up for Salma at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
In a statement accompanying the video, Sonko explained his actions, saying, “As a parent, nothing prepares you for the moment your child reaches out in fear, in pain, or in desperation.”
He used the personal incident to highlight the broader issue of gender-based violence in Kenya, urging other victims to speak out and seek help from available services. He also offered advice to young couples, stating, “My heartfelt plea to young couples is this: please, choose peace. Choose dialogue before anger… Violence doesn’t solve anything; it only destroys the heart, the home, and the future.”
Despite the confrontation, Sonko indicated he was open to a future sober conversation with his son-in-law regarding the couple’s marriage.
