Historic Peace Deal and Strategic Talks Set as Kenyan President Joins Regional Leaders in Washington

Nairobi, December 2, 2025 – President William Ruto has departed for Washington, D.C., at the invitation of U.S. President Donald J. Trump, for a series of high-stakes diplomatic engagements centered on a landmark peace agreement and bilateral talks.
The centerpiece of the visit is the official signing of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)–Rwanda Peace Agreement. President Ruto will witness the ceremony alongside Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC. The agreement, hailed as the most significant breakthrough in addressing decades of conflict in Eastern DRC, builds upon earlier mediation efforts through the Nairobi and Luanda Peace Processes and a joint East African Community (EAC)–Southern African Development Community (SADC) initiative.
The Washington signing is expected to consolidate commitments from all key parties, unlocking critical pathways for disarmament, demobilization of armed groups, unimpeded humanitarian access, and long-term stabilization in the restive region.
Beyond the peace deal, President Ruto’s itinerary includes focused engagements aimed at advancing Kenya’s strategic interests with the United States. Key areas of discussion will encompass trade, investment, and security cooperation.
A major outcome will be the signing of the Kenya–U.S. Health Cooperation Framework. This agreement marks a strategic shift in the nations’ 25-year health partnership, moving it to a sustainable, government-led model. The new framework aims to advance Universal Health Coverage and support Kenya’s journey toward a self-reliant health system by 2030.
During the talks, President Ruto is set to outline Kenya’s ambitious new economic transformation agenda, which envisions a transition toward a first-world economy. The plan is predicated on four pillars: human capital development, infrastructure expansion, agro-industrial growth, and expanded irrigation facilitated by extensive dam construction.
The President will seek increased U.S. investment through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in these priority sectors. Enhanced collaboration on energy security initiatives is also on the agenda to support the country’s long-term development goals.
The visit underscores Kenya’s growing role as a regional peacemaker and its pursuit of deepened economic and strategic ties with a key global partner.
