EU, South Sudan Discuss Energy Cooperation to Boost Power Supply

Juba, December 3, 2025 — The European Union and the Government of South Sudan have initiated high-level talks aimed at expanding cooperation in the critical energy sector, with a focus on enhancing electricity supply through regional interconnections.
The discussions took place during a courtesy call by the European Union Ambassador to South Sudan, Amb. Pelle Enarsson, to the office of a senior South Sudanese official on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Dams, highlighting the technical focus of the engagement.
Central to the talks was the exploration of practical modalities for improving South Sudan’s electricity access, particularly through the development of power interconnections with neighbouring Uganda. This initiative is seen as a key avenue for importing more reliable and sustainable energy into the country.
Both parties underscored the fundamental role of stable electricity in driving economic growth, improving public service delivery, and uplifting the livelihoods of citizens. The discussions reviewed ongoing regional efforts and identified potential partnerships that could accelerate the pace of electrification across South Sudan.
The South Sudanese host welcomed the EU’s continued support and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral and regional collaboration in energy development. This diplomatic engagement signals a concerted push to address one of South Sudan’s most pressing infrastructure challenges, leveraging international partnerships for tangible progress in the power sector.
