Headline: Buvuma Island Residents Stage Peaceful Protest at Agriculture Ministry in Entebbe
ENTEBBE – In an unprecedented move, over one hundred residents from the Buvuma Islands have converged and set up a temporary camp directly outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) in Entebbe.
The group, which established the encampment on Thursday, has transformed the area into a scene of quiet demonstration. Local sources confirmed the protesters identified themselves as coming from the Lake Victoria island district, citing a need to directly engage with the ministry.
While the specific details of their grievances have not been officially detailed by the ministry, the deliberate choice of location strongly points to issues core to the island community’s livelihood. Buvuma’s economy is predominantly based on fishing and agriculture, suggesting the protest may be linked to disputes over land use, fishing regulations, agricultural policies, or related governmental programs.
“There are over a hundred of them,” a resident near the ministry offices stated. “They are saying they are from Buvuma and have camped here because they want to speak to the Ministry of Agriculture.”
The sudden arrival and scale of the gathering have drawn significant attention and raised concerns among Entebbe residents about the unusual sight of a large group camped at a key government installation.
Authorities are reportedly monitoring the situation. Security presence has been noted around the area to ensure public order is maintained while the demonstrators make their appeal.
As of now, there has been no immediate public statement from the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the group’s presence or the specific issues they seek to address. The camp remains in place, marking a direct and visible appeal from the island community to the central government.
