BREAKING: NUP Issues Urgent Security Alert, Warns of Mass Abductions Targeting Leaders and Activists
KAMPALA — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has issued an urgent security notice to its leaders and supporters nationwide, alleging that a coordinated operation of mass abductions and enforced disappearances has been activated by state security apparatus ahead of the 2026 elections.
In a stark advisory circulated on Tuesday, the opposition party stated it possesses “credible information” that the operation, allegedly spearheaded by the Crime Intelligence unit under Christopher Ddamulira, began yesterday. The primary targets are reported to be NUP leaders and “pro-change activists” in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and surrounding districts, with activists in other urban centres across Uganda also said to be at risk.
“Already, several comrades have been picked up,” the notice claimed. It further alleged that operatives have been divided into groups, with each ordered to abduct at least 10 individuals in their assigned areas.
The party issued a twelve-point list of stringent precautionary measures, urging its members to adopt immediate personal security protocols. Key recommendations include disabling phone location services, avoiding predictable routines and solitary movement—especially at night—and frequently changing locations, including sleeping places. The notice also warned against using direct phone calls for sensitive conversations, advised securing devices with strong passwords, and urged vigilance against suspicious surveillance.
A particularly grave warning highlighted the alleged tactic of coercing family members. “If your family member or friend calls you urgently requesting to see you, do not immediately agree… First verify independently, because loved ones are often put on gunpoint to disclose details and location of our people,” the notice read.
Despite the alleged crackdown, the NUP leadership called for continued political mobilization. “Even with this prevailing situation, MAKE IT A POINT TO CONTINUE AGITATING, MOBILISING and ORGANISING for #ProtestVote2026,” the statement urged.
In a defiant message to supporters, the notice sought to decentralize leadership resilience: “DON’T WAIT FOR ANY LEADER TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO… If our polling agents are arrested, immediately become the polling agent. If one leader is picked up – EVEN IF IT IS ME, let that not dampen our spirits. WE ARE THE LEADERS.”
The advisory concludes with a rallying cry for a political transition, using the hashtags #FreeUgandaNow and #ProtestVote2026.
As of now, there has been no immediate comment from the Uganda Police Force or the Crime Intelligence unit regarding these serious allegations. Independent verification of the alleged abductions is ongoing.
