African Union Hails Historic DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement as a Regional Milestone
Washington D.C., USA – December 4, 2025 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed a landmark peace agreement signed today between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda, heralding it as a pivotal step towards lasting stability in the Great Lakes region.
The agreement was signed by H.E. President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC and H.E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda at a ceremony in Washington D.C., witnessed by several African Heads of State and international partners.
In a press statement, Chairperson Youssouf described the development as “a significant milestone in the pursuit of lasting peace, security, and stability.” He emphasized that the accord marks a crucial opportunity to transform decades of regional tension into a foundation for reconciliation and cooperation.
The Chairperson extended appreciation for the international diplomacy that supported the process. He specifically acknowledged the constructive role of the United States, including the personal engagement of President Donald Trump, for helping create conditions conducive to the agreement. He also commended the State of Qatar for its consistent diplomatic backing and readiness to support African-led peace initiatives.
The statement paid tribute to key African mediators whose sustained efforts paved the way for the breakthrough. Special recognition was given to H.E. President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo for his ongoing facilitation and H.E. President João Lourenço of Angola for his earlier mediation. The complementary roles played by the leaders of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) were also highlighted as instrumental throughout the protracted process.
Looking ahead, H.E. Mr. Youssouf issued a firm call for full and faithful implementation. “The Chairperson calls on all parties to faithfully implement the agreement in both letter and spirit, ensuring that this moment becomes a foundation for reconciliation, regional cooperation, and sustainable peace,” the statement read.
Reaffirming the continental body’s commitment, the African Union Commission pledged to accompany the parties and regional mechanisms in advancing the peace process for the benefit of the peoples of the DRC, Rwanda, and the wider Great Lakes region.
